The 14th Annual Race For
Research 5K Fun Run/Walk benefiting the Cancer League of Colorado.
Sunday, August 22nd, 2010!
Washington Park
1700 E. Louisiana Ave.
Denver, CO
How It Started
Michele Plachy-Rubin was a young wife, mother
and kindergarten teacher in the Denver Public Schools when she was diagnosed
with brain cancer in December of 1996. The
Race for Research was conceived by Michele's friends to raise money
to fund local cancer research. Tragically, Michele lost her fight with
cancer in May of 1998 but The Race for Research continues as an
opportunity for men, women and children to help fight cancer in Michele's
memory.
Who Benefits
The Cancer League of Colorado has
been selected to receive the funds raised from TheRace for
Research. Cancer League of Colorado, Inc is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization composed entirely of volunteers. Unique to non-profits, the cancer league has no paid staff and no offices. All operating expenses are covered by membership dues. The Cancer League now has more than 375 volunteer members who share the commitment to fight cancer.
About the Cancer League of Colorado...In 1969, five women whose lives were all affected by cancer, founded Cancer League of Colorado. From their individual struggles grew a joint commitment to raise money for cancer research and patient care within the state of Colorado. This all-volunteer charity organization became the Cancer League of Colorado, Inc. Since 1985, we have awarded over $5 million in research grants and service awards.
Based on recommendations from our Scientific Advisory Board, each year the Funds Allocation Committee distributes monies for research and service grants. Generally 90% of Cancer League’s funds are awarded for research grants; the remaining 10% are awarded to service grants.
Participants have ranged in age from one to eighty-one
and have included doctors, nurses, teachers, families, runners and walkers
of all abilities, as well as Michele's friends and family. Everyone is
welcome! Organizers of this year's Race for Research expect
1,000 to 1,500 participants and 75 volunteers at this year's event.
